Chelsea are ready to launch a £39 million offer for Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko, according to reports in France.

RMC Sport report that the France international has been made a priority target by Antonio Conte and the Premier League champions have held talks with the player’s entourage over a summer deal.

But Chelsea face strong competition for Bakayoko, most notably from Manchester United as Jose Mourinho has also made the midfielder’s acquisition one of his main aims for the upcoming window.

The report claims that Bakayoko is set to leave the newly crowned Ligue 1 champions this summer and four clubs have opened negotiations with the midfielder’s representatives – Chelsea, United, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain.

The 22-year-old has been an influential figure in Monaco’s midfield and has received praise for his performances this season.

But after Monaco’s 2-0 defeat to Juventus in the Champions League earlier this month, former United defender Rio Ferdinand warned clubs against spending too much on the midfielder.

‘I don’t know if he is ready to make that big step yet,’ he said.

‘There were deficiencies in his game in terms of picking people up and identifying danger.’
